A brief history of the Jerrycan in WWII

In WWII the need for efficient fuel distribution systems became urgent as Armies became increasingly mechanized.

Bulk fuel was stored in 55 gallon drums (used as an intermediate storage vessel after coming off huge fuel tankers.) This method was unsuitable for use in the combat arena, the fuel tanker was vulnerable to enemy fire and the drums could not be manhandled or carried easily on smaller vehicles or aircraft.
